Valued at over $35 million and incorporating complex civil engineering design and construct (D&C) elements, the Adelaide Central Reinforcement 275kV Transmission Line (ACR) Project is one of Diona’s milestone projects.

The key deliverable was to design and construct a three phase underground extra high voltage circuit between a new electricity substation in Adelaide’s CBD, and the Torrens Island Power Station, located some 20km north of the city. The circuit was installed to reinforce Adelaide’s energy supply to facilitate future growth.

The delivery team for the project consisted of four entities: ElectraNet (end-user and system operator), LS Cable / Taihan Electric Company (electrical engineers and cable manufacturers), and Diona (civil engineering design and construction contractor).

During the tendering phase, Diona recognized that a key project requirement would be on time delivery. Conscious of the risk associated with completion of the design, Diona prepared and submitted a detailed preliminary design with the tender bid. This design was managed entirely ‘in-house’ by Diona and provided Diona with a ‘head-start’ when the contract was awarded. The preliminary design identified several cost saving alternatives to the specification, as well as innovative solutions for some of the more complex elements of the project. All innovative and cost-saving solutions were adopted by the client.
