The Impact of ‘Shut Up Boss’ on Mental Health Awareness

Last week, Diona embraced a unique fundraising initiative titled ‘Shut Up Boss’, encouraging our leaders, Peter Massey and David O’Connor, to remain silent for an entire day. This effort was not about silencing voices but amplifying the importance of mental health awareness and support, aligning with one of our core values: caring for people’s wellbeing.

A Day of Silence

The challenge took place from 5pm on 25 October to 5pm on 26 October, during which both Peter and David went completely silent. The silence symbolised the often-unheard voices of those struggling with mental ill health, highlighting the need for greater awareness and support.

Fundraising Goals and Achievements

Our initial goal was to raise $5,000 to support batyr, an organisation dedicated to empowering young people to share their stories of hope and resilience. The community’s response was overwhelmingly positive, surpassing our expectations and raising a total of $7,580.

Engagement and Rewards

To make the challenge interesting, various fundraising milestones allowed Peter and David limited communication options, from sending texts and emails to making phone calls and attending meetings. This gamified approach encouraged more donations and engagement from our team.

Why Silence?

The ‘Shut Up Boss’ challenge was inspired by the desire to understand, even if just slightly, the silence experienced by those feeling unable to speak up about their mental health. It also served as a powerful reminder of the stigma that prevents many from seeking help.

A Continuing Commitment

Our partnership with batyr is a testament to our commitment to mental health advocacy and creating environments where people feel supported and understood. This event is just one of many initiatives we’ve embraced to support batyr’s mission, reflecting our ongoing dedication to mental health awareness and support.
