Sydney Light Rail

Acciona Infrastructure Australia

Sydney CBD, New South Wales, Australia

The Sydney Light Rail infrastructure project involves the construction of 24 kilometres of track from the Sydney CBD to the Eastern Suburbs of Randwick and Kingsford. The project culminated in a historic moment in June 2019 when the first tram in 61 years travelled up George Street to Sydney Town Hall, signalling a new future in light rail.

Sydney Light Rail Intersection Work

Diona began work on the Sydney Light Rail project in 2015 and were responsible for delivering numerous excavation and utilities installation projects on parts of the CBD and South East Light Rail network as a contractor to Acciona. Located in Sydney’s central business district, Diona was faced with the challenge of determining what services were buried below ground, and then how to engineer and design a solution for construction.

Diona’s experience working in dense urban environments and our established relationships with utilities owners meant that we were well placed to manage the complexities of working around live services in compliance with health, safety, environment and accreditation requirements. Diona offered robust solutions to design issues as they arose and demonstrated leadership through a strong team safety culture which has been synonymous with the Diona name.

Shutdowns and Shift Work to Intersections Given the location of the project, major intersection crossings were a critical path for this project. Diona identified this early on, and worked with Acciona to provide experienced engineering, multi-disciplined workers with professional skill sets to successfully deliver the necessary works across 13 intersections. In addition to the 18-20 Diona crews working during the week, more than 140 weekends were worked to ensure works were delivered on time and with as little disruption to the community as possible.

Electrical Works Overview
Eleven substations were built across the alignment to power the light rail, including one at Lilyfield. Diona’s teams worked on four substation builds, including Surry Hills, Central Station, Haymarket and Circular Quay areas. In 2018, Diona successfully constructed and commissioned the Hay Street substation, which will power the light rail through to the CBD South. The substation consisted of a three-storey concrete frame building. Diona undertook the complete fit-out and architectural works, as well as connecting multiple electrical conduits from the substation to the new rail corridor. Further north at Circular Quay, the crews completed connections and conduit works.

In the suburbs of Surry Hills, Randwick and Kingsford, the challenge was to underground all of the electrical services – one of the largest challenges faced by the project in this area. Diona teams worked on undergrounding of electricity to around 80 properties. These works included pillar and underground to overhead (UGOH) works, the removal of overheads and completion of jointing works in coordination with the service provider. Diona also completed a number of upgrades to the Ausgrid network in the Randwick area which involved supply and installation of conduits and cable as the nominated ASP1 installer.

Water and Sewer
As a reputable Sydney Water installer, the Diona crews worked on multiple sites throughout the CBD such as the Tank Stream project in Circular Quay and the demolition and rebuilding of a number of old water assets along George Street. These included multiple sewer rebuilds of up to five metres in depth, some of which were at the centre of major road intersections.

Civil Works
Following the installation of deep trench services of water and wastewater, Diona teams were able to assist in the final stages of installing shallow services such as communications, TPS and traffic signals routes.

The surface drainage design involved the installation of Aco channel, kerb and gutter in all areas, and working on the pavement build for paving and asphalting works. The light rail stop platforms were also constructed by Diona, with the finished concrete now a feature of the final finishes. The project entered the testing and commissioning phase, with a focus on the proving of laid conduits, pipes and punch listing items. Diona worked with the client to handover the project.

The Sydney Light Rail project has delivered above and below the ground for the people of Sydney. Residents can now travel quickly and easily from the eastern suburbs to the CBD using the light rail line and service. Underground upgrades to utilities and the delivery of other essential community infrastructure also ensures the CBD operates efficiently and effectively as expected.
