Rozelle STS Expansion and Associated Civil Works

Ausgrid

Sydney, NSW

Diona was engaged by Ausgrid to upgrade the existing Rozelle Substation. The improvements will provide reliable, sustainable power for customers and ensure capacity for future infrastructure development in the area, including the WestConnex Rozelle Interchange and Sydney Metro West.

The construction works consisted of the following:

  • New combined 33kV switch room and control building with cable basement
  • Full switch building fit out including cable tray installs, embedded earthing system, fire detection system, light and power
  • Demolition and reinstatement of transformer bay two
  • Conduit installation and cable pulling
  • Reinstatement of concrete driveway.

Diona proposed an alternative pile design solution to eliminate the following risks:

  • 2.5 metre deep mass concrete plinth requiring temporary works
  • Groundwater risks
  • Disposal of contaminated material.

This alternative design solution reduced many risks involving deep excavations and shoring and saved construction time.

The Diona team succeeded together to overcome many obstacles including groundwater issues, removal of contaminated material, CFA piling works due to poor ground conditions and working within an operational substation. Additionally, the team faced the unprecedented challenge brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. The team worked together and went above and beyond to help keep all site personnel safe and healthy by implementing numerous preventive and protective measures. Thanks to this effort the project continued uninterrupted, and was successfully delivered on time and on budget.
