Diona was engaged to install water and sewer services across a new bridge crossing the South Para River in Gawler as part of the new Gawler East Link Road being built by Bardavcol.

The linking of the service involved the install of 125 metres of DN419 MSCL water pipe spanning across a 112 metre bridge for the water main and DN409 MSCL sleeve for the sewer line.

The project involved the development and implementation of a methodology in conjunction with a local subcontractor Reimann’s Manufacturing.

Sixteen industrial plastic rollers were designed and manufactured by Richmond Rollers and hung from the threaded rod which would be used to support the pipe in the future. This threaded rod was hung and supported by Ferrules which had been precast into the bridge during construction by Bardavcol. The pipe was then welded by Reimann two joints at a time and pulled along the rollers for the total length of the bridge. Upon completion of the install across the span of the bridge, the rollers were removed one by one and replaced with galvanised brackets to fasten the pipe in place.

The water MSCL was hydro tested to determine if any leaks were present at the joints and Holiday Testing completed to ensure no damage was done to the external Sintakote lining. Upon testing completion, the MSCL was tied into the valve sets located on either side of the bridge and a scour chamber installed if any future maintenance works needed to be completed on the pipework.

This same install process (excluding hydro testing) was completed with the MSCL sleeve for the sewer and a DN250 HDPE pipe was welded external to the sleeve than pulled through tied into the pumping main previously installed by Diona via a valve set located on either side of the bridge.

The installation was a first for Diona and Reimann’s Manufacturing and both companies ensured a high quality of workmanship was delivered to Bardavcol and SA Water.
