Diona delivered the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line (ECRL) 33kV Installation as one of many various contracts covering electrical, water and wastewater services for the NRT Infrastructure Joint Venture (NRT IJV) to support the Sydney Metro Northwest project, Australia’s largest public transport project.

Sydney Metro is a new world-class railway for Sydney. Services started in the city’s north west from Rouse Hill to Chatswood in May 2019 on Australia’s first fully-automated railway, with 13 metro stations and 4,000 new commuter car parking spaces.

A new generation of metro trains runs every four minutes in the peak in each direction. Customers don’t need a timetable, they’ll just turn up and go.

Diona was engaged by NRT Infrastructure JV to install two 33kV electrical feeder cables through the existing tunnel to power the new stations and infrastructure along the Epping to Chatswood section of the metro.

Utilising the innovative techniques and equipment developed by Diona, the crews completed multiple difficult OLX cable pulls and straight runs.

These OLX cable pulls, which involved pulling cable up along the walls and across the ceiling of the tunnel, were necessary for transferring the cable across the tunnel crossovers.

Diona’s scope of works included:

  • Installation of two 33kV electrical feeder cables through the tunnel.
  • Installation of over 52 kilometres of cable tray and four major structures in the ECRL tunnel.
  • Testing and commissioning works

All delivered via shutdown works across approximately 10 weekend rail possessions from 2016 to 2018.
