Brunswick Area Sewer Augmentation
Byron Shire Council
Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia
Diona collaborated on the Brunswick Area Sewerage Augmentation Scheme in the scenic Shire of Byron Bay.
The sewerage treatment plants in Mullumbimby and Brunswick Heads were operating at full capacity and would have been unable to service new housing developments planned for the area. Diona was responsible for building new pump stations (one in each town along with rising mains to divert the sewerage to these new pump stations, instead of the sewerage treatment plant). Combined with these pumping stations, the project consisted of approximately 6km of 375mm DICL pipeline and 450mm PVC for the rising mains.
The project presented a number of challenges, including working within a range of terrains often with a high water table and poor soil structure (difficult to hold a pipeline), river crossings requiring use of directional drills, restricted access at the two pumping station sites, and environmental restoration.
Council recognition
Following completion of the project, the area has returned to its original condition. The Byron Shire Council recognised Diona’s contribution to the project's environmental success. In 2010, along with the Brunswick Estuary Management Plan, Diona’s project received the Council’s award for Excellence in Environmental Management.
