Diona is delivering the upgrade of 10 kilometres of low-pressure gas distribution mains and associated services within the inner-Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy.

A large portion of the works were undertaken by means of insertion, meaning the existing low-pressure gas mains were used as a conduit to carry the new high pressure (HP) poly main. However, where circumstances dictated, HP main was also installed using open cut and directional drilling methods.

This project presented many challenges due to the location including high volume of pedestrian and vehicle traffic, and high voltage and low voltage risks with Yarra Trams. Diona worked closely with each stakeholder, including Yarra Trams and VicRoads, local councils businesses and residents to minimise disruption.

Given the dense urban nature of the location, Diona encountered many third-party services such as high voltage electrical conduits associated with the tram network. To mitigate the risk to our teams working adjacent to the services, Diona commenced using hydro excavation in-lieu of mechanical excavation. The implementation of this process both saved time on the project and reduced risks associated with the works.

Diona’s performance on this project has led to the award of a further mains renewal contract within the CBD of Melbourne.
